Where Alayam began

My mother's sewing machine

In loving memory of Anu Radha

My mother, Anu Radha, learned tailoring simply because she loved it. Until her last day she stitched her own clothes herself, so that my father would never carry the cost of buying them for her.

For my sister and me, she was our designer and our tailor. A loose seam, a hem to take up, a button gone: at home it was done in two minutes. I still love the sound of that machine, and I remember how carefully she cleaned it and looked after it before she sat down to sew.

She was the backbone of our family for everything we wore. Alayam is built for women like her, and for every home where someone sits down at a sewing machine for the people they love.

Why Alayam

Every stitch keeps a home going

Behind every garment here is a person: a mother at her sewing machine, a young designer with her first boutique, a master tailor whose hands know cloth better than any machine. When you shop on Alayam, your money goes to them.

The home tailor

After the house is asleep, she sits down at her sewing machine. Her stitches pay school fees, buy medicines, keep the family standing. Alayam brings her steady orders, each with its pattern drawn and its customer found, so her skill earns what it deserves, from home.

The young boutique owner

She has the eye, the courage and a small shop with a big dream. What she needs is reach. On Alayam her designs travel across India, and every order reaches her measured and ready to cut.

And you

When you order here, you're not buying from a warehouse. You're buying from someone building a life, one piece at a time. Your outfit is made for your body, by hands that care how it looks on you.

What we do for them

Fair work, from home

Orders that come to them

Customers measure, design and pay online. We send each order to a tailor or boutique near them, as many a week as they choose, so a mother can stitch around her family's day and a young boutique can grow without spending on ads.

The hard part done

Every order arrives with its pattern drafted from the customer's measurements, the cutting layout and the stitching steps. Their time goes into what they're best at: cutting and stitching beautifully.

Paid for their craft

We pay a published rate for every garment, once it passes the quality check. No haggling, no chasing customers for money, and no customer paperwork.

Every piece on Alayam is made for one person, by one person. Thank you for choosing them.
